Sight Words!

Hello again!

How do you teach sight words?? They play such an essential role in reading and writing, yet I feel that there really is not enough time in the day to really get to sight words!

In my classroom, I send home weekly sight word homework that I include in addition to a reading log and math sheet. (Now, if my school didn't require homework in reading, phonics, and math... I probably wouldn't be doing so, but I figure I might as well if I HAVE to send homework home). I have found such amazing success with my students sight words with the use of this homework! Also, the homework is the same from the preprimer list all the way to the second grade list so the homework becomes predictable for both students and parents.

Also, this has allowed me to differentiate my homework as well. My students may have all different words depending what Dolche list they are working on. Check it out in the images below!

Many teachers have explained that they have used this for homework, for practice, and rotate it into center activities. The most important thing to remember is there is NO prep!

Every Monday included a read, trace, and write page. Multiple exposures of spelling and reading the word = success!

Tuesday's build recognition of the word. Students will search for the word in and color using the code included.

Wednesday's are for reading the words... Students will read and highlight the words. Students may circle and shade in (as picture above) depending what is available to them at home.

Every Thursday, students will use their sight words to write a sentence to display their understanding of the word, not just their ability to recognize and spell. I believe this is such an important skill and there is not enough emphasis on it.

You can click on any of the images to head to my store and check out my sight word homework bundle pack. I am currently working on creating the same style homework aligned to the Frye list as well!

Now, once I introduce the words for homework, they are displayed in our phonics area under the "words of the week". These cards are from my Owl Theme Word Wall Cards. At the end of the week we put them on our word wall with the matching Word Wall Headers that can also be found in my store! Click any of the images to head directly to the product.

During phonics centers I will sometimes add the homework pages like the read and color into a center for the students that need more practice. I also use resources from the sight word center bundle pack!

These two packs include roll and read, memory, write a sentence, read the room, and scramble read the room!

Roll and read's are the highlight of my sight word center pack... My students love anything when they get to use a dice. Above they are coloring, but I also have some that are laminated so that they can use a dry erase marker and eraser and use their intials with their partner. This makes a great activity for your sub tubs!

I also play other games like Buzz, memory, and we have spelling contests anytime we have a spare minute!

That's a little summary of how I do sight words in Room 103! How do you do sight words??

Almost time!

Hello again!

See I promised I would get better about posting updates!

Now if you're like me, I'm freaking out right now. I go back to school August 17th for PD and the kids start the following Monday! EEEK. I have SO MUCH TO DO. I go on vacation next week leaving me two days to set up my classroom... I could go in this week but ITS MY BIRTHDAY ON THURSDAY! HAHA... who cares about 24 anyways??

One thing that I have been trying to prep are my back to school math centers which were a huge hit with my firsties last year and I found to be SUPER helpful in getting their brains ready for math again after a few months off.

Also, they were super beneficial in giving something my students could do so that we could learn the rules and expectations of math centers.

Here students will match the tally marks with a number. This was super helpful given that we didn't have much time to really learn tally marks and it helped me do a spot check of who really knew them and who needed a review.

These were such a fun number sense review! We learned these whole group under the mimeo camera of how the puzzle should look all together and then got to work.

My lower kids really needed this... this helped them under stand the numbers. In the packet, there are "erasers" included if you want to use but I found the cubes to be much more time efficient given that I had 32 kids to prep centers for!!

I have also been getting my word wall cards ready. This summer I added sight word cards to match my word wall so my room can be pinterest worthy ;)

These are the word wall cards that match the alphabet cards! I post these on my word wall and then add words as the year goes on. My plan is to print, laminate and use the following sight word cards that match  this year! :)

EEK can't believe I'm actually thinking about this right now!! But I am super excited to get back to work, as much as I love my Summer!!

Mid Summer Update... All About Time!

Man oh man have I been slacking! One of my goals for this school year is to keep up with the blog. Since my last post I have had a lot of changes in my personal life, however... I am in a MUCH better place in my life and realized I was in an incredible unhealthy situation. I am so much happier which resulted in a much more POSITIVE school year this past year.

I had a class of 32 kiddo's by the end of the school year... yes, you read that right. THIRTY TWO. I loved this class and even though it was only my second year I will truly remember them. They were such passionate learners who really cared about one another.

Anyways! A lot of new products on my TPT store... so please stop by and check them out... I'll be highlighting them over the next few weeks before school starts!

Here is one of my newer products!

One of my kiddo's favorites this year was time... which was made more fun and easier to teach with the help of my Time Centers and Printables!

This and more printables are included in the pack to use as an assessment or to check for understanding after practicing.

This is time memory where students can match the analog with the digital time.

My students LOVED playing time bingo! (P.S. I hoard bottle caps to make easy to pass out bingo markers... aka no fighting over colors or who has more when they're all boring caps ;) !)

Keep your eyes on the blog for updates and follower freebies and I PROMISE to be better about updating! :)
