Sight Words!

Hello again!

How do you teach sight words?? They play such an essential role in reading and writing, yet I feel that there really is not enough time in the day to really get to sight words!

In my classroom, I send home weekly sight word homework that I include in addition to a reading log and math sheet. (Now, if my school didn't require homework in reading, phonics, and math... I probably wouldn't be doing so, but I figure I might as well if I HAVE to send homework home). I have found such amazing success with my students sight words with the use of this homework! Also, the homework is the same from the preprimer list all the way to the second grade list so the homework becomes predictable for both students and parents.

Also, this has allowed me to differentiate my homework as well. My students may have all different words depending what Dolche list they are working on. Check it out in the images below!

Many teachers have explained that they have used this for homework, for practice, and rotate it into center activities. The most important thing to remember is there is NO prep!

Every Monday included a read, trace, and write page. Multiple exposures of spelling and reading the word = success!

Tuesday's build recognition of the word. Students will search for the word in and color using the code included.

Wednesday's are for reading the words... Students will read and highlight the words. Students may circle and shade in (as picture above) depending what is available to them at home.

Every Thursday, students will use their sight words to write a sentence to display their understanding of the word, not just their ability to recognize and spell. I believe this is such an important skill and there is not enough emphasis on it.

You can click on any of the images to head to my store and check out my sight word homework bundle pack. I am currently working on creating the same style homework aligned to the Frye list as well!

Now, once I introduce the words for homework, they are displayed in our phonics area under the "words of the week". These cards are from my Owl Theme Word Wall Cards. At the end of the week we put them on our word wall with the matching Word Wall Headers that can also be found in my store! Click any of the images to head directly to the product.

During phonics centers I will sometimes add the homework pages like the read and color into a center for the students that need more practice. I also use resources from the sight word center bundle pack!

These two packs include roll and read, memory, write a sentence, read the room, and scramble read the room!

Roll and read's are the highlight of my sight word center pack... My students love anything when they get to use a dice. Above they are coloring, but I also have some that are laminated so that they can use a dry erase marker and eraser and use their intials with their partner. This makes a great activity for your sub tubs!

I also play other games like Buzz, memory, and we have spelling contests anytime we have a spare minute!

That's a little summary of how I do sight words in Room 103! How do you do sight words??
